Report card comments help parents understand how their child does in both his schoolwork and classroom behavior. For students struggling in certain areas, comments should utilize constructive ideas for improving academics or behavior. The comments should also emphasize one area where the student excels.

    Start Positive

  1. Report card comments are meant to inform parents of what's going on with their child. By starting out with a positive comment, parents may approach a critical comment with more understanding.
  2. Behavior Comments

  3. Inform parents of behavior problems by being specific. For example, "Johnny has trouble paying attention during the day and distracts other students by talking and playing."
  4. Math Comments

  5. Teacher comments for math should include work-at-home ideas parents can utilize with their child. A comment that a student understands division but has trouble with mental calculations should have follow-up activities the child can do at home to improve.
  6. Reading Comments

  7. Let parents know what their child enjoys reading in class followed by any area that needs improvement, such as comprehension or fluency.
  8. Citizenship Comments

  9. Write a comment that lets parents know how well their child gets along with other kids or helps the school community during the day.
