The Dangers of Dry Ice

Although videos on YouTube seem to glamorize dry ice explosions, be assured that dry ice is no joke. Dry ice is solid carbon dioxide used to transport lab specimens or food items. Though it's helpful in that respect, there are several dangers associated with it.

Skin Burn

Dry ice has a surface temperature of negative 109.3 degrees Fahrenheit. It can freeze the skin, causing burn-like injuries. So always handle it with insulated gloves or oven mitts.

Explosion

Because of the carbon dioxide content, dry ice can explode when left in an airtight container. Make sure it's in a ventilated container.

Carbon Dioxide Poisoning

Dry ice doesn't melt. It goes directly from a solid to a gas. This can cause the surrounding air to become saturated with toxic levels of carbon dioxide. Air out the room where the dry ice is stored before you go in.

Container Damage

If you place bottles or canned good directly onto dry ice, it could cause those items to break open or explode. Make sure there's insulation between the dry ice and the container.

Internal Injury

Even though it's an ice, dry ice wasn't meant to be eaten. Because it's pure carbon dioxide, it could cause damage to your internal organs.
