Types of Infant Formula
Choosing the right formula for your infant can be a daunting task. Luckily, there are different formulas made specifically for each baby's individual needs. According to the American Academy of Pediatrics, there are three main types of infant formula: cow's milk-based, soy-based or elemental-based.
-
Forms
-
You can buy powdered formula that must be mixed with water, or ready-made formula, which costs a little more but can be a real time-saver when you're on the go. Unless your doctor tells you otherwise, make sure the formula contains iron.
Cow's Milk-based Formula
-
Cow's milk formula is nutritionally similar to breast milk though no formula contains the antibodies found in breast milk. Some children are allergic to the proteins in cow's milk, so other options such as soy formula might be a better option.
-
Soy-based Formula
-
Soy-based formulas are an excellent choice for infants who are lactose intolerant or allergic to cow's milk-based formula. A 2006 report published by the American Academy of Pediatrics showed that more than 70 percent of the world's population had a deficiency of the enzyme, lactase, that helps metabolize lactose.
Elemental Formulas
-
An elemental formula is one in which the components of the formula have been broken down to make digestion easier for the infant. Doctors may recommend these specialized formulas for infants who are allergic to both cow's milk- and soy-based formulas, or infants who are born prematurely babies or have certain medical conditions.
Generic and Brand-name Formulas
-
Some parents are confused about the difference between generic and brand-name formulas. Although the ingredients might vary, the U.S. Food & Drug Administration requires that all infant formulas have the same nutritional content.
