Urban Hairstyles for Black Men

Urban hairstyles are popular trends started in the inner cities around the United States. Some urban trends stand the test of time, while others tend to come and go. Does this Spark an idea?

  1. Etched

    • This urban style is achieved by making designs in the hair with electric shears. Waves, triangles and squares are popular etched patterns.

    Corn Rows

    • Tiny to medium-width braids are woven into the entire head. The hair might be cut to medium length for shorter braids or left long to create braids to hang down in the back.

    Dreadlocks

    • Dreadlocks

      The style originated in the Caribbean islands. The hair is left long and twisted into sections, then molding wax is applied to hold the sections together.

    Close Shave

    • This completely bald look is achieved by using a straight razor on the entire head. The head is often polished with a soft cloth and hair oil to achieve a shiny look.

    Fade

    • Popular with younger men, the look entails shaving the sides of the head and leaving a square shape on the top. The look was made popular by music and movie star Will Smith.
