    1. Time Frame

      • The average length of pregnancy in the basset hound is 63 days. Labor, also called whelping, can last as long as 24 hours.

      Litter Size

      • Basset hounds have an average litter size of eight puppies. However, large litters of 15 puppies or more are not uncommon.

      Prenatal Care

      • According to Dr. Jim Baker, DVM, pregnant basset hounds are prone to bloat. To help prevent this, split their daily ration into four small meals instead of one or two big ones. Do not overfeed your dog because extra weight can lead to problems delivering pups.

      Considerations

      • Because of their body shape, delivery by Caesarean section is often necessary with basset hounds. Overweight females in particular have difficulty delivering their litter. If an hour passes between puppies, you should call your veterinarian.

      After Delivery

      • Mother bassets should be watched carefully for two weeks following whelping. They have a tendency to lie on their puppies. It takes less than one minute for a puppy to smother.

      Warnings

      • Basset hounds are prone to pseudo or false pregnancy. They will have all the signs of a pregnancy without the pups. A check by a veterinarian for puppies should be done a month into the pregnancy.
