Basic Computer Training for the Workplace

Most workplaces have computers, and employees are expected to have at least rudimentary computer skills. However, in cases where these skills are lacking, the employer may want to provide basic computer training for the worplace.

  1. Basic Skills

    • Employees will need to understand how to turn the machine on and off, how to open and close programs, and how to use the keyboard and mouse to effectively navigate through applications and documents.

    Typing

    • Typing ability is essential when using a computer. Some employers may expect a minimum typing speed or a certain percentage of accuracy when typing.

    Email & Calendar

    • Many workplaces use a standard email program for communication and a calendar program for keeping track of appointments, meetings, deadlines and other important schedule items. Employees must know how to use these programs.

    Office Suite

    • Many workplaces expect workers to have basic proficiency in Microsoft's Office suite or similar productivity software. These include word-processing, spreadsheet and slide-show-creating software such as PowerPoint.

    Proprietary Software

    • Much workplace computer training focuses on understanding and learning how to use proprietary software that is specific to the company's function. This can include financial record-keeping software, phone call documentation software and other types of programs.
