Family Ministry Job Descriptions

Family ministry jobs are as varied as the families they are intended to serve. While some positions may require a professional degree and be paid staff positions, other jobs are open to volunteers.

  1. Youth Minister

    • A youth minister works either on staff or in association with a church to provide services including weekly youth meetings, outreaches events, missions trips and parenting support.

    Religious Educators

    • Religious educators teach children age appropriate Bible, doctrine and character lessons.

    Adult Education

    • Adult educators teach classes on marriage, parenting and family life. Teachers guide the class through specific books or written materials intended to strengthen family communication and cooperation.

    Church Retreats

    • Church retreat planners organize family-oriented trips, complete with a childcare program, fun family activities and inspirational messages.

    Nursery

    • Many churches provide a nursery to care for young children during weekly services. Nursery workers provide quality care for attending children by creating a safe and kid-friendly atmosphere.

    Family Counseling

    • A family counselor provides services, such as marriage, teen crisis and grief counseling, and while some churches have professional counselors on staff, others have pastors or lay persons who assume this responsibility.
