The History of the Bridge Card Game

Bridge is the most popular card game in the English-speaking world, played by four people with a regular deck of 52 cards. The game involves bidding to name trump, a dummy hand, taking tricks, and even a secret code.

  1. Roots

    • Bridge was derived from Whist, a simple trick-taking game with no bidding and no trump suit.

    Bridge-Whist

    • The first version of Bridge, appearing in the 1890s, allowed the dealer to name a trump suit and play his partner's hand as well.

    Auction Bridge

    • The next version, created in about 1904, gave all of the players a chance to name trump through a bidding system.

    Contract Bridge

    • The currently popular form of bridge is Contract Bridge, which has additional scoring rules added by American millionaire Harold Vanderbilt in 1925.

    Fun Fact

    • Over the years, an elaborate system of bidding has developed that allows Bridge players to "secretly" give their partners information about the cards they hold through the bids they make.
