Nikau Tree Facts

The Nikau palm, or Rhopalostylis sapida, is the southern-most growing palm tree and the only palm native to New Zealand. It is commonplace in many private gardens and an iconic symbol that shows up in the works of New Zealander artists.

  1. Range

    • Nikau palms are native to New Zealand and the surrounding islands. They prefer humid low land areas with some protection from the wind and frost.

    Size

    • In optimal conditions, Nikau palms grow to be about 25 feet high with up to six-foot-long arching fronds, but they stay slightly shorter in the full sun.

    Variations

    • There are several different variations of the Nikau palm because of the seclusion created by island life. There has yet to be an official classification of all the variants.

    Propagation

    • Nikau palms reproduce by seeds which are bright red or orange. Many commercial nurseries grow plants in greenhouse culture for the retail market.

    Uses

    • In addition to culture for ornamental purposes, the fruit of the palm is a very important component in the ecosystem as food for small birds.
