Types of Carnival Games to Make

Carnivals started out as costumed festivals that Catholics held during the first day of Lent. The word carnevale means "to put away the meat." Today carnivals can be small celebrations held at elementary schools, which often feature homemade games run by parents.

  1. Cake Walk

    • The Cake Walk requires between eight and 12 laminated numbers, pieces of paper with the same numbers, a bowl from which to draw numbers, homemade baked goods such as cakes, a CD player and CD, and consolation prizes. During the game, you walk around in a circle on the laminated numbers while music plays and you stand on a number when the music stops. If you are on a drawn number, you win a cake.

    Baseball Throw

    • For the Baseball Throw, you need rubber baseballs, a stool or table, aluminum milk bottles, a backstop and prizes. For the game, you try to knock down milk bottles using rubber baseballs.

    Feed the Animal

    • Feed the Animal calls for a board painted with a picture of an animal, such as a monkey or elephant, with a hole in the middle, plastic fish or bananas, and prizes. During the game, players try to throw the plastic food into the hole in the board.

    At the Races

    • For At the Races, you need a piece of wood or a board painted to look like a race track with six lanes, a pair of dice, plastic horses and prizes. During the game, the person in charge of the booth throws a dice twice, first to determine which player gets to move and next to determine how many spaces he moves. The player who gets to the finish line wins a prize.

    Duck Pond

    • Duck Pond requires between 15 and 20 plastic ducks, which you will mark with numbers, a washtub or wading pool, and prizes. During the game, you pick a duck out of the pond, and the number you draw corresponds to your prize.
