Chicken Egg Farming

If you want to raise chickens and harvest eggs, you need to take a few measures to ensure the health of your chickens and regular egg production.

  1. Warmth

    • Baby chicks need to remain warm, so keep their housing at 99 degrees when you first get them. This will keep them from freezing to death.

    Feed

    • At first, you may need to spread the feed on the ground of the housing for easy access, and then move it into a feeder once the chickens are used to it. Feed them a chick starter/grower for the first four or five months of life before switching to regular chicken feed.

    Water

    • Water for baby chicks needs to be warm (body temperature). Water that is too cold may cause them to go into shock or freeze. You can also add a tablespoon of sugar to each quart at first, to keep them drinking.

    Housing

    • Keep the floor of their housing safe for their feet. Do not allow exposed cage or slippery surfaces; cover with towels or fabric.

    Egg Production

    • After five or six months, healthy hens will begin to lay eggs. You can expect to get approximately half the eggs per number of chickens daily; in other words, 40 chickens will lay about 20 eggs per day.
