Oregano Oil for Dogs

Oil of oregano can do wonderful things for humans and dogs alike, and has been known to treat everything from arthritis and allergies to influenza, infections and wounds.

  1. Function

    • According to Dr. Zoltan P. Rona, MD, MSc, oil of oregano is a well-known antiseptic, antibacterial, antifungal and antiviral.

    Benefits

    • Dr. Rona indicates that oil of oregano inhibits the growth and spread of germs, harmful bacteria and fungi, as well as kills viruses.

    Potential

    • Oil of oregano could be used in any of three ways, including administering 2 to 3 drops a day orally in a 1:3 ratio with olive oil, applying it topically in a 1:4 ratio, or 10 to 15 drops in a diffuser.

    Warning

    • Some dogs may experience skin irritation from topical application, so test a small area first; it is not recommended for use on pregnant or nursing dogs.

    Considerations

    • The taste is potent and distasteful to most animals; disguise it by placing it in peanut butter or another dog-friendly food, so that dogs will actually ingest it.
