Leishmaniasis Dogs Symptoms

Transmitted by sand flies, leishmaniasis is a condition in dogs that can cause a number of problems. If you aren't careful, you can also be infected through the sand fleas that infected your dog. In dogs, this disease is very hard to treat, though some drugs like pentavalent antimonials can be successful. Although leishmaniasis is more common in developing countries such as India, Nepal, and Sudan, it can be found anywhere in the world that has sand flies.

  1. Epistaxis

    • One of the most common signs of leishmaniasis in dogs is epistaxis, or bleeding from the nose.

    Stomach Problems

    • Leishmaniasis in dogs can cause diarrhea and vomiting.

    Thirst

    • Dogs who have leishmaniasis often exhibit signs of excessive thirst, including watering eyes and drinking more than usual. Consequently, they may urinate more than is usual for them.

    Wounds

    • Leishmaniasis in dogs causes wounds that appear as very small bite marks from the sand fleas, but unlike in other diseases, these wounds don't seem to heal over time. These wounds appear especially around the ears and nostrils, legs, pads of the feet, and rear end.

    Nails and Skin

    • Some dogs may experience dermatitis, especially around the eyes, as well as nails that grow crooked and damaged nail beds. Dermatitis manifests as a rash-like skin problem, while damaged nails will look inflamed or even bleed.

    Weight

    • Dogs with leishmaniasis often lose weight, in part due to stomach problems. The weight may come off quickly or slowly, depending on the diarrhea and vomiting experienced by the dog.
