Polymyositis in Dogs

Adults dogs sometimes develop a muscle condition known as polymyositis. With this health problem, the dog's muscles will become inflamed, but it is noninfectious and, according to The Merck Veterinary Manual, prognosis is typically favorable. If your dog develops polymyositis, take some time to learn more about the condition. Then, talk to you vet to come up with a treatment plan for your pup.

  1. Types

    • Polymyositis can be either acute or chronic; chronic types of the condition are progressive.

    Symptoms

    • Symptoms of polymyositis include depression, weight loss, weakness or lethargy, muscle atrophy and lameness.

    Treatments

    • The most common treatment option for polymyositis is oral corticosteroids. Your vet may also prescribe other immunosuppressive drugs as well, such as cyclophosphamide.

    Dermatomyositis

    • When polymyositis causes skin lesions, it is called dematomyositis; this type of polymyositis may also cause problems with connective tissue.

    Causes

    • Although the causes of polymyositis in dogs haven't been extensively studied, it is an autoimmune disease, and must in part be caused by genetics.
