Experiments With Baking Soda and Vinegar

If you are looking for some fun, educational and inexpensive things to do with your kids during the summer or after school, all you need is some baking soda, vinegar, a few supplies and some ideas for experiments.

Chemical Reaction

Because of the chemical properties of baking soda and vinegar, when they are combined they give off carbon dioxide gas and water.

A Baking Soda Rocket

Take a film canister and pack it full of baking soda, then add 2 tsp. of vinegar. Put the lid back on and set it upside down on the ground and stand back. It will pop up into the air.

Exploding Ziplock Bag

Put 1 1/2 tbsp. of baking soda in a paper towel and fold it, then put 1/2 cup of vinegar and 1/2 cup warm water into a Ziplock bag. Put the towel in the bag but hold it out of the vinegar while zipping the bag closed. Then let the towel fall into the vinegar and stand back; the gas released in the chemical reaction will pop the bag.

Blow Up a Balloon

Put 1 tsp. of baking soda in a balloon. Put 4 tbsp. of vinegar in an empty water bottle. Stretch the balloon over the mouth of the water bottle and let the baking soda fall into the vinegar; the gas released from the chemical reaction will blow up the balloon.

Volcano

Put 2 tbsp. of baking soda, 1/4 cup warm water and dark dye into the well of a plastic volcano. Then add 1/4 cup of vinegar to watch it erupt.
