Reading Programs for Teens

Teens often want to do anything but read, so how can you get your teenagers interested in reading? Try these reading programs.

  1. Summer Reading Programs at Public Libraries

    • Reading over the summer can be encouraged through summer reading programs. Find a public library to get your teen involved in and sign him up for summer reading. Books (and sometimes comics and magazines) can be read for prizes.

    Book Buddy Programs

    • Many schools have programs where high school students will travel to local elementary schools to read to kindergarten classes. This benefits the teens as well as the kindergarteners. A book buddy program encourages teens to read aloud to younger children and increases reading comprehension.

    Book Clubs

    • Schools and libraries also have book clubs. A book is usually assigned, and the teens will meet to discuss the book they read. If your teen is interested in discussing a book they read, encourage them to attend a book club.

    Graphic Novel Book Clubs

    • Librarians have been interested in graphic novels for a while as a way to get teens reading. A Graphic Novel Book Club encourages teens to read graphic novels and come to discuss what they read. Look for these at your local library.

    Intergenerational Book Clubs

    • School and libraries also bring together families at Intergenerational Book Clubs. These book clubs combine adults who want to bring their teen or child to a book club to discuss a book they all have read. This is great way to use the "Harry Potter" books in a book club because there is crossover appeal for children and adults. The whole family can enjoy discussing the books.
