What Is Geodon Medication?

Geodon is the brand name of the medication ziprasidone hydrochloride, prescribed to treat schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. Researchers believe Geodon works by opposing the action of the brain chemicals dopamine and serotonin.

  1. Types

    • Geodon is classified as an atypical antipsychotic drug, along with Abilify, Seroquel, Zyprexa and others. Each of these drugs affects an individual differently, and one patient also may tolerate specific side effects better than another.

    Method

    • Geodon is usually taken as a capsule twice a day, although an injectable version can be used to calm agitated patients quickly.

    Considerations

    • Because Geodon is associated with serious side effects, doctors usually do not prescribe it unless other medications have been ineffective.

    Serious Side Effects

    • Geodon may cause potentially-fatal heartbeat abnormalities. It also is associated with diabetes and low blood pressure. Geodon use can lead to tardive dyskinesia, a permanent condition causing involuntary repetitive movements, and neuroleptic malignant syndrome, a life-threatening neurological disorder.

    Other Side Effects

    • More likely side effects include indigestion, lack of appetite, nausea, vomiting, constipation or diarrhea, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, fatigue, headache, muscle aches, stuffy or runny nose, weakness and skin fungal infections.
