Why Do We Warm Milk for Babies?

Sometimes parents do things just because that is what their parents did, and their parents before. It's always best to think through things without relying on the way it was always done. One of your first decisions as a mother will be whether to breast or bottle feed. If you chose to bottle feed, your next decision will be to determine whether or not warming baby's bottles is necessary.

Breast Milk is Warm

  • When babies are breast fed, they are getting warm milk that's at body temperature.

Breast Milk is Best

  • The American Association of Pediatricians and other health experts agree that breast milk is best. Some believe that even the temperature is just right for a baby's tiny tummy.

Bottle Feeding

  • When using formula to feed a baby, everything should be as similar to breast feeding as possible. Skin to skin contact should still occur and milk should be warmed to be like mother's milk, especially for newborns.

Warming up Formula

  • Formula should never be heated up in the microwave. If your drinking water is safe, warm water straight from the tap can be used. Otherwise, fill a sink with hot water and immerse the cold bottle to warm it up.

Older Babies

  • Warming up formula is best for newborns because it imitates breast milk more closely and is gentle on the digestive system. Older babies can be weaned from warm to cold milk when they begin using a sippy cup.
