About Micardis

Micardis is the brand name for telmisartan, a drug prescribed to treat high blood pressure and congestive heart failure. Micardis Plus is also available, containing both telmisartan and the diuretic hydrochlorothiazide.

  1. Type

    • Micardis is classified as an angiotensin II receptor antagonist, which blocks the effects of a hormone called angiotensin II. Angiotensin II tends to constrict blood vessels and promote retention of fluid and salt.

    Dosage

    • Patients are usually advised to take Micardis once a day with or without food. They usually begin with 40 mg and increase dosage to 80 mg, if necessary.

    Common Side Effects

    • Common side effects associated with Micardis use include back pain, diarrhea, respiratory tract or sinus infection, runny nose and sore throat.

    Pregnancy Considerations

    • Micardis can cause severe birth defects and even be fatal to an unborn baby if a pregnant woman takes this medication during the second and third trimesters.

    Caution

    • Micardis also can cause blood pressure to drop too low, particularly in congestive heart failure patients whose blood pressure was normal. This is more common with Micardis Plus.
