Finasteride Side Effects for Women
Men with male-pattern hair loss are the primary users of finasteride, because it can prevent further hair loss and increase hair growth. Available under brand names such as Propecia and Proscar, finasteride is sometimes prescribed for women dealing with symptoms of polycystic ovary syndrome.

Classified as a type II 5-alpha reductase inhibitor, finasteride inhibits the enzyme that converts testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT), thus reducing DHT levels in the scalp. This can reverse hair loss due to male-pattern baldness.
Hirsutism

Research has not indicated that finasteride helps reduce female-pattern hair loss. However, finasteride can reduce excessive hair growth in women (hirsutism), such as those with polycystic ovary syndrome. Hirsutism involves dark, coarse hair growing on the face, chest and back.

Women who may become pregnant should not use finasteride, because it can cause genital abnormalities in male fetuses, such as development of female genitalia. These women should not even handle the drug because it can be absorbed through skin.
Other Side Effects

Other side effects associated with finasteride use in women include breast enlargement and tenderness, and increased sex drive.
Allergic Reaction

In rare cases, women experience an allergic reaction to finasteride. Signs are rash or hives, itching, swelling and difficulty breathing.
