Cephalexin 500 mg Information

Cephalexin is an antibiotic used to treat bacterial infections including pneumonia, urinary tract infections, and infections of the bones, ears and skin. A cephalosporin antibiotic, the drug is similar to penicillin, but has an even broader range of activity.

  1. Types

    • Cephalexin is available in several brands, including Biocef, Keflex, Keftabs, Panixine and Zartan. It can be prescribed in capsule, liquid or tablet form. A common dosage is 500 mg every 12 hours for 1 to 2 weeks.

    Pet Use

    • Although the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not approved cephalexin for use in animals, veterinarians prescribe it to treat bacterial infections in dogs and cats. Pet owners should never give this medication to an animal without consulting with a veterinarian first, because of possible side effects.

    Common Side Effects

    • Cephalexin use can cause upset stomach or nausea. Taking it with food or milk can help. Some people also experience diarrhea, dizziness, fatigue or headaches.

    Colitis

    • A rare side effect of cephalexin use is pseudomembranous colitis, a serious intestinal condition that can occur several weeks after treatment has ended. Symptoms include persistent and severe diarrhea, and abdominal pain and cramping.

    Other Infections

    • Oral thrush or vaginal yeast infections also can occur due to cephalexin use, particularly if the patient takes this medication repeatedly or for lengthy time frames.
