- Fish oil contains eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). Potency is measured by EPA, the stronger anti-inflammatory ingredient.
- Fish oil is calculated for dog weight at 20 mg/lb EPA. Multiply your dog's weight by 20 to get the daily dose. For example, a 50 lb. dog gets 1,000 mg of EPA per day.
- For convenience, mix liquid fish oil in food or put a fish oil capsule in a treat. The dose may be given once daily or divided and given twice daily.
- Fish oil loses potency with heat and air exposure. Follow label directions for storage and note expiration dates to ensure freshness.
- Fish oil works over time. Joint mobility may improve within a few weeks. Dry skin and hair typically improve from nine to 12 weeks.
- Fish oil has a mild blood-thinning effect that can affect blood clotting. Follow your veterinarian's directions for discontinuing fish oil before surgery.
