With all the various contraceptive methods available, here are a few of the most commonly used and most effective methods and their success rates to help you determine what will work best for you.

    Abstinence

  1. Abstinence is the most effective method of contraception. It is 100 percent effective when the participant completely abstains from sexual contact with the opposite sex.
  2. Birth Control Pills

  3. Birth control pills contain two hormones, estrogen and progestin, which prevents the eggs from maturing. Birth control pills can cost from $15 to $50 a month and are about 99 percent effective.
  4. Condoms

  5. Condoms are a covering that is placed on the penis, collecting the sperm and preventing it from entering the vagina. Condoms are sometimes free at local clinics and Planned Parenthood locations and are about 98 percent effective when used correctly.
  6. Withdrawal

  7. Withdrawal involves removing the penis from the vagina, right before ejaculation and preventing sperm from being introduced to the vagina. This method is free but does require practice to perform it properly. Withdrawal can be 96 percent effective when done correctly.
  8. Diaphragms

  9. Diaphragms are inserted into the vagina and prevent sperm from reaching the uterus. Diaphragms cost between $15 and $75 and are about 94 percent effective.
