World War II was over and life was good. It was the 1950s. Hairstyles of the day for women reflected their new-found independence and wealth.

    Poodle

  1. This short early 1950s hairstyle was designed to frame the face. A perm was required to achieve the all-over curls look.
  2. Pixie

  3. The Pixie was made popular by Audrey Hepburn in the mid 1950s. The short style consisted of swept bangs and pin curls to frame the face.
  4. Beehive

  5. The Beehive found popularity in the late 1950s. The look is achieved by setting medium-length hair in large rollers, then sweeping the hair into a spiral shape on top of the head. Hairspray is applied heavily to keep the style in place.
  6. Bouffant

  7. This hairstyle is achieved by backcombing the hair at the crown and smoothing loose hair over the front. Hairspray was used to hold the puffy hair in place.
  8. Ponytail

  9. A single ponytail secured at the lower crown of the head was a popular style in the 1950s. Tying a scarf around the base of the tail was a common accessory.
