Alopecia in Dogs

Alopecia, or loss of hair, is not an uncommon symptom in dogs. The symptom can be caused by many conditions, some that are not serious and some that can be fatal. Among the more common causes are parasites and allergies.

  1. Mange

    • Mange is one of the most common causes of hair loss in dogs. There are two types of mange in canines, sarcoptic mange and demodectic mange.

    Fleas

    • An infestation of fleas and the accompanying itching and scratching can cause a dog to lose patches of hair. Some dogs have an allergic reaction to the saliva of a flea and a single bite can cause them severe irritation.

    Neurodermatitis

    • Also known as acral lick dermatitis, this condition is caused by dogs licking themselves. Causes may include anxiety, boredom and stress. It can develop into an obsessive behavior that results hair loss.

    Alopecia Areata

    • This is thought to be an autoimmune disorder and causes patches of hair loss on the head, neck and body. There is generally a spontaneous recovery from this condition.

    Calluses

    • Large breed dogs often develop calluses from chronic pressure on areas such as their elbows. These areas appear thickened and are hairless and raised.
