Normal Baby Weight

When a new baby is born, two questions typically come first. "Is it a boy or girl?" and "How much did baby weigh?" Moms love to compare their baby's birth weight and growth in the first year, but sometimes these comparisons make moms worry about whether or not their baby's weight is normal.

  1. Full-Term Birth Weight Range

    • A healthy, full-term baby can weigh anywhere between 5 and 9 pounds. This is a big range, but anything in this range is normal and healthy.

    Average Weight

    • While there is a big range of normal, most babies fall very close to the average, which is 7 pounds, 4 oz.

    Initial Weight Loss

    • After birth, babies lose weight. Most babies lose around 10 percent of their birth weight and should regain it within two weeks.

    Newborn Weight Gain

    • Babies should gain about 1 oz. per day or at least 5 oz. per week.

    Growth In The First Year

    • A baby normally doubles his birth weight by 5 months and triples his birth weight by his first birthday.
