Upper respiratory infection
-
Upper respiratory infection is the most common lung disease in cats and is similar to a cold in humans. It can progress to pneumonia if it doesn't respond to treatment or goes untreated.
Pleural Effusion
-
Pleural effusion occurs in the space between the lungs in the chest cavity. It is caused by asthma, bronchitis, heart failure, kidney disease, infection, cancer, injury and other conditions.

Parasites
-
Lungworms and heartworms can infect cats' lungs, creating lung disease. These conditions are more common in particular geographic areas, such as the southern United States, but can occur across the nation.
Histoplasmosis
-
Histoplasmosis is a disease of the lungs that might develop in cats in rural areas. It is caused by inhaling a fungus that is especially prevalent in areas where chickens are raised.
Feline Infectious Peritonitis
-
FIP is the most serious of conditions causing lung disease in cats. There is no treatment for FIP, and it is nearly always fatal.
