What Requirements Are Needed to Be a Wedding Planner?

Because wedding planners are usually self-employed, there are no specific requirements they need to have. However, there are a number of important skills that wedding planners should have in order to run a successful consulting business because they may be asked to do a wide variety of tasks. These skills include a passion for weddings, some knowledge of the bridal industry's inner workings and people skills.

    Education

  1. There are no specific educational requirements for wedding planners and usually a high school diploma will do. A Bachelor's degree, especially in Business, can be helpful given the wide range of tasks wedding consultants may be asked to do.
  2. Organization

  3. Wedding planners must be very organized and have strong time management skills.
  4. Flexibility

  5. Every couple is different, making flexibility a must for wedding planners. Flexibility also helps a wedding planner deal with changes that arise during the planning process.
  6. Fashion Sense

  7. Wedding planners often help brides chose the color, fabric and style of the wedding party's attire. This makes it important for planners to have a solid sense of style and fashion.
  8. Self-Motivation

  9. Many wedding planners are self-employed and so must be self-motivated as well.
  10. Financial Savvy

  11. Wedding planners will benefit from having some financial savvy so they can help the betrothed plan and stick to a wedding budget. They may also need to haggle with vendors.
