The spleen is considered a filtering organ, as it helps rid the body of old blood cells. Healthy blood cells in the spleen destroy germs. The spleen works within the lymphatic system of the body to regulate blood and fluid levels.

The spleen is located next to the stomach on the upper left side of the abdominal cavity. It is a part of the lymphatic system. The spleen assists the body in fighting infections and balances body fluids.
Effects

A healthy spleen assists in the process of distributing lymph fluids throughout the body's blood stream. This action prevents fluid build up in the body which can cause swelling.

The lymphatic system is made up of vessels, nodes, organs and tissue. It also contains fluid called lymph. White blood cells are part of what make up the lymph fluid that fights infection.
Components

Along with the spleen, bone marrow and thymus are also a part of the system. The bone marrow and thymus make up the cells contained in the lymph fluid.
Function

A person can survive without a spleen; however, the body would be compromised when fighting off infections. As a result, the liver would have to work harder at filtering out impurities for the body.
