Why Is It Bad to Watch TV?

Though other forms of entertainment are taking time away from television such as video games and the Internet, television is still a large source of entertainment. However, there are some consequences to watching too much television.

  1. Violence and Children

    • Studies have shown that children who watch violent television become more aggressive. Not only does television depict violence as an appropriate solution to problems, but they also teach children to disregard human life.

    Obesity

    • Those who watch television frequently are not being active. Exercise is necessary in order to prevent obesity. Also, those who watch television often snack in front of the television, losing track of how much they eat.

    Time Lost

    • Television uses up a large amount of time. Those who watch television frequently sometimes fail to finish important tasks in life.

    Decline of Reading

    • Television and other forms of entertainment have lead to a decline in reading. Reading has many benefits including brain stimulation, memory, concentration and focus improvement.

    Less Social Interaction

    • Television distracts individuals from social interaction. Research has shown that social interaction decreases the incidences of Alzheimer's disease.
