Contact Lenses vs. Eyeglasses

When deciding between eyeglasses and contact lenses, it often comes down to personal preference. One may be more comfortable than the other, or one may be the more practical option. Before you decide, however, look over some examples of pros and cons others have considered.

Style

Glasses were once thought of as less than stylish, but many new frames have emerged. Contact lenses, meanwhile, come in colored varieties or clear to show your natural eye color.

Vision

Contact lens wearers have reported that they like the increased peripheral vision, while glasses wearers sometimes complain that their lenses fog in certain temperatures.

Cost

The cost of contact lenses has decreased significantly in the past decade, and new eyeglass frames are available in many price ranges. Both now cost about the same amount.

Care

Glasses should be wiped daily with an appropriate cloth and cleaner. Most contacts should be cleaned daily with solutions; however, you should consult your care instructions.

Comfort

Glasses do place weight on the ears and nose unless a "featherweight" frame is selected. Many people report comfort while wearing contact lenses; however, each wearer is different and some experience scratching or pressure sensations.

Contacts and Careers

People working in certain careers are not permitted to wear contact lenses. According to the American Chemical Society, it is suggested that those working in chemical laboratories not wear contact lenses.
