Tongue Infections & Diseases
The tongue is a muscle that aids with speaking, eating and taste. When an infection or disease occurs on the tongue, these processes can be impaired. Infections such as ulcers or canker sores can be painful, and are the most common diseases of the tongue. Oral cancer can also affect the tongue.

Infections
-
Fungal, bacterial or viral infections are common causes of mouth sores or ulcers affecting the tongue.
Fungal
-
Thrush is a fungal infection that occurs when yeast builds up in the mouth. The primary symptom is a series of raised white patches. Thrush can appear after taking antibiotics, which can kill the natural bacteria in the mouth.

Bacterial and Viral
-
Canker sores can be the result of a bacterial or viral infection. The sores have a red base and are white or grey in color. They disappear on their own, but often return.
Considerations
-
Infections of the tongue can also be caused by piercings and tongue splitting. Good oral hygiene must be practiced to keep the tongue and mouth healthy when undergoing these fashion fads.
Cancer
-
Oral cancer most often results from using tobacco, but can affect non--tobacco users as well. Signs can go unnoticed, as the cancer generally starts with a small sore or ulcer in the mouth or on the tongue.
