Yohimbe Dangers

Yohimbe is an herbal supplement gleaned from an evergreen tree that grows in the wilds of Africa. The bark of the tree is where the yohimbine chemical is found. The FDA has approved the limited use of yohimbe for the treatment of erectile dysfunctions.

  1. Blood Pressure

    • Yohimbe works by increasing the blood flow throughout the body, including the penis. However, people who have high blood pressure problems should not take yohimbe.

    Dizziness

    • People who take yohimbe have reported feeling dizzy. Dizziness can occur when sitting, standing or during changes in your body's position. You should not drive if yohimbe makes you dizzy.

    Toxicity

    • Taking more than the prescribed amount of yohimbe can lead to toxicity in the body. Symptoms of toxicity or overdose is an upset stomach, fainting and nervousness.

    Interactions

    • Some foods like that contain tyramine, such as cheese and wine, interact negatively with yohimbe. This interaction can produce dangerous effects on your central nervous system and may cause hallucinations.

    Anxiety

    • It is normal to experience occasional mild anxiety. However, yohimbe can intensify anxiety and cause insomnia.
