Physical Development of Two Year Olds

The growing independence of toddlers will be evident this year as they want to do more for themselves. Give them the opportunity to enhance such fine motor skills as self-feeding and brushing teeth and gross motor skills including running, climbing and jumping. Development may vary, but there are general guidelines associated with most 2-year-old children. Contact your child's doctor with any specific concerns.

  1. Physical Attributes

    • According to Parents.com, growth will be steady but it start to slow a bit. They will typically add about 4 pounds and grow two and a half inches during the year.

    Coordination

    • Get ready for your active 2-year-old to run and jump with ease and walk backward without falling. Hopping, galloping and climbing up stairs one at a time while holding onto a railing will also be great exercise and lots of fun.

    Coloring Time

    • Toddlers will demonstrate more dexterity while coloring. Instead of gripping crayons tightly in their fists, they will be held in the well between the fingers and thumbs as they vigorously scribble.

    Self-feeding

    • Mealtime may be more about eating than cleaning up messes. Most 2-year-olds can hold a fork and spoon with more control as they self-feed themselves.

    Cleaning Up

    • Assistance is still needed but they can hold a toothbrush and start to brush their teeth, comb their hair and dress and undress themselves.
