What Are the Different Types of Government?
Government exists to manage society, provide security and maintain order. Early societies were small and self-sufficient, but as communities grew larger and more complex, structures to manage that complexity began to form. The first small-city states appeared about 5,000 years ago. Since then, numerous types of governments have appeared.
-
Monarchy
-
Monarchy is rule by one person, usually a king or queen, but sometimes an emperor. Monarchs typically inherit their power through birth and rule for a lifetime. Saudi Arabia is an example of a monarchy. Britain, despite having a queen, is no longer considered a monarchy because she holds no political power.
Democracy
-
Democracy is rule by the people. A democracy can be direct, in which the people themselves participate in the decision-making process, or representative, in which the people vote for government officials to express their interests. India is the world's largest democracy.
-
Autocracy
-
Autocracy is rule by a single, all-powerful, self-appointed leader. It is often used synonymously with dictatorship. Cuba is an example of an autocracy.
Oligarchy
-
Oligarchy is rule by a small, elite class. Oligarchies exist to serve the interests of the ruling class and are often tyrannical. South Africa during the 20th century is an example of an oligarchy based on race.
Theocracy
-
Theocracy is rule by God or by officials who are thought to be guided by God. Iran is an example of a theocratic republic.
Republic
-
A republic is a government in which the head of state is not a monarch and the people have some say in how they are governed, usually through representatives. Democracy and republic are often used interchangeably. France is a republic.
