Head Lice Information for Children

Head lice, Pediculosis capitis, are tiny parasites that live and feed on blood from the scalp. They are not dangerous, but they are contagious and can spread from one head to another.

  1. Causes

    • Head lice transmit from person to person via shared personal items, such as combs, hats, scarves, hair accessories and headphones.

    Signs

    • Head lice are very tiny, but the louse and the eggs they lay (nits) can be seen by the naked eye like white dots on the scalp and the strands of hair.

    Symptoms

    • Intense itching is the most common symptom as the saliva from the lice bites cause itchy red bumps seen on the scalp and behind the ears and neck.

    Treatment

    • Doctors and pharmacists can recommend medicated shampoos, rinses and lotions to kill the lice in one or two treatments; however, it is imperative to comb out the nits with a special comb.

    Risk Factor

    • Close contact of children and belongings in schools make it difficult to prevent the spreading of head lice even though your child may have excellent hygiene.

    Prevention/Solution

    • As an extra precaution in ridding of lice, wash all bedding, clothing, brushes, combs, and stuffed toys in very hot soapy water, then vacuum the living area thoroughly.
