Types of Systems in the Human Body

The human body is a complex machine that must simultaneously handle vast amounts on incoming sensory data, movement and balance, maintaining proper temperature and metabolism. It has a number of separate systems that compliment one another and that all contribute to maintaining a stable internal environment (known as homeostasis). Six of the main systems are discussed below.

  1. Skeletal system

    • The skeletal system is made up of bones and connective tissues that provide bodily structure and organ protection.

    Muscular System

    • The muscular system handles voluntary and involuntary motions. It is made up of skeletal, smooth and cardiac (heart) muscles.

    Circulatory system

    • The circulatory system is composed of the heart, arteries and veins. It handles transporting blood and waste throughout the body.

    Respiratory System

    • The respiratory system is tasked with bringing fresh air into the system, and also with carbon dioxide removal. It is made up the lungs, nose and trachea.

    Digestive System

    • The digestive system breaks down food into components the body can use and includes the mouth, stomach and intestines.

    Nervous System

    • The nervous system is composed of the brain, spine and nerves. It is tasked with transmitting signals throughout the body.
