Dosage of Glucosamine for Dogs

Glucosamine is a nutrient that promotes healthy joints. Glucosamine supplements in the canine diet help rebuild cartilage and maintain healthy joint fluids.

Types

Glucosamine for dogs is sold in capsules, liquid, powder and chewable tablets.

Dosage Levels

An initial higher dosage brings joints up to an improved level. After four to six weeks, Glucosamine is reduced to a maintenance dosage.

Small Dogs

A dog less than 10 lb. has an initial dosage of 125 to 250 mg daily and maintenance at 125 mg daily or every other day.

Medium Dogs

A dog 10 to 24 lbs. receives initial dosage at 500 mg twice daily. Decrease the daily dose by 250 mg every three to four weeks until maintenance is reached at about 500 mg once a day.

Large Dogs

A dog 50 to 100 lbs. gets an initial dosage of 1,000 mg in the morning and 500 mg in the evening. Decrease the daily dose by 500 mg every three to four weeks until maintenance is reached at 500 to 750 mg once daily.

Adjustment

If the dog does well at the initial dosage but has mobility difficulty at the lower dosage, Glucosamine is increased to the comfort level.
