Babysitters can be paid anywhere from $3 an hour to over $20, depending on a variety of factors, from the babysitter's age and experience to the area in which you live.

    Determine Your Sitter's Expertise

  1. The older the sitter---and the more experience---the more you will need to pay. Expect to spend more for a sitter who has an early education degree, or CPR and first aid training.
  2. Factor in Your Children

  3. You'll pay an extra $1 to $2 for each extra child---and another $1 or $2 if your children are infants or toddlers that require extra TLC. Also, you'll pay a few dollars extra if your child has a particular special need and you've chosen a sitter who has experience dealing with that need.
  4. Know the Cost of Living

  5. If you live in a big urban area, you'll need to pay your sitter more than your friends who live in more rural towns.
  6. Consider Any Special Requests

  7. If you're asking your sitter to stay overnight or for a long stretch of time, expecting her to fix meals or transport your children, or hiring a sitter for a holiday, you'll need to pay more per hour.
  8. Ask What the Going Rate Is Before You Interview

  9. Before you talk to your potential sitter, ask around to see what people in the area are paying so you can be sure to settle on a fair rate for both you and your sitter.
