Arthritis Treatments for Cats

The signs of arthritis in cats usually appear gradually over time. An aging cat stops getting up on a favorite chair or bed, and seems to run less. While there's no cure for arthritis in cats, there are many treatment options that can help.

  1. Glucosamine

    • Glucosamine stimulates joint function and repair. Health food stores sell Glucosamine capsules, and liquid Glucosamine for cats is available online. Capsules are easy to use if you and mix the powder into your cats' wet food.

    Adequan

    • Plysulfated glycosaminoglycan (brand name Adequan) is an injectable drug that reduces inflammation, increases the thickness of joint fluid and inhibits the enzymes that break down cartilage within the joints. Adequan is available from veterinarians, but many vets will provide the medicine and syringes so it can be given at home.

    Hyaluronic Acid

    • Hyaluronic acid is one of the ingredients in Adequan. Available at health food stores, it lubricates inflamed joints, improves mobility and relieves pain during activity.

    Weight Management and Exercise

    • Weight loss will help an obese, arthritic cat feel more comfortable and regain mobility. Exercise strengthens muscles, keeps ligaments and tendons flexible, and helps blood circulate to stiff joints.

Wild Salmon Oil or Fish Oil

    • The Omega-3 fatty acids in wild salmon and fish oil have anti-inflammatory benefits. Most health food stores and independent pet supply retailers sell both. Some cats will lick the oil off a spoon, or you can mix it into the wet food.

    Beware of NSAIDs

    • Nonsteroidal Anti-Inflammatory Drugs, including Metacam, provide powerful pain relief but can have very serious side effects, including kidney failure.
