Depression is a serious problem that affects many. Chemical imbalances in the brain cause depression. Some natural vitamins and herbal supplements may be used to treat depression instead of medication.

    St. John's Wort

  1. St. John's Wort may help improve and balance moods. Those with mild depression often use St. John's Wort as an alternative to antidepressants.
  2. Fish Oil

  3. The omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil are needed for healthy brain function. Omega-3 fatty acids can help fight depression caused by chemical imbalances due to poor brain function.
  4. Vitamin B Complex

  5. Vitamin B-6, B-12 and folic acid help produce the brain chemical serotonin. Vitamin B complex may replenish these deficiencies, which may have led to depression.
  6. DHEA

  7. DHEA is actually a hormone found naturally in the body, but it begins to decrease after age 30. DHEA is available as a supplement to combat depression that may be linked to changes in hormone levels.
  8. Warning

  9. Never take vitamin supplements without talking to your doctor first. Some vitamins can react negatively with medications you are already taking and cause serious side effects.
