About Schnoodles

The Schnoodle is a mixed-breed dog, made up of a cross between the purebred Schnauzer and the purebred Poodle. The Schnoodle typically belongs to the "toy" group of dogs; however, some breeders produce Schnoodles that can range from thirteen to sixty-six pounds. As it is not a pure breed, this dog is not recognized by the American Kennnel Club.

  1. Appearance

    • The Schnoodle's face has a "loveable look, like that of a child's stuffed animal," according to Petplace.com. The ears are generally short to medium length, and the tail may or may not be docked.

    Coat

    • The Schnoodle can have white, black, grey, brown or apricot-colored fur that requires daily brushing. The fur may be coarse, a characteristic of the Schnauzer, or more smooth and fluffy, like that of the poodle.

    Temperament

    • The Schnoodle is intelligent, loving and devoted to its owner. However, the dog may be aggressive towards strangers and may require socialization training.

    Exercise

    • As the Poodle is a highly-active dog and the Schnauzer tends to be lazy, the Schnoodle requires daily walks and physical activity to "prevent its Poodle side from getting bored and to keep its Schnauzer side fit and healthy," according to Petplace.com.

    Common Health Problems

    • The Schnoodle can suffer from diseases that commonly afflict the schnauzer and poodle. Some of these diseases include hypothyroidism, hip dysplasia, epilepsy, cataracts and diabetes.
