Official Pool Table Rules

Pocket Billiards has been enjoyed by people of all ages for generations. There are many different types of games that can be played on a pool table, and there are also several basic rules that should be followed when using a pool table. Paying attention to those rules will make playing pool a more enjoyable experience for everyone.

  1. House Rules

    • Each billiard hall, and each individual pool table owner, may have specific rules for the use of their pool tables. Those house rules should be followed at all times.

    Courtesy

    • Do not intentionally distract another player while that player is shooting, and avoid standing directly in the player's line of sight.

    Table Care

    • Never sit on a pool table or climb onto a table when playing a shot. Instead, use a bridge, when needed, to attempt a hard-to-reach shot. Keep food and beverages away from a pool table. When not in use, a pool table should be covered at all times.

    Pool Cues

    • Be sensible when handling a pool cue, to protect the table, the cue, lighting fixtures and those around you.

    Safety

    • Do not stand behind a rack of balls when another player is breaking. Cue balls may "jump" off the table after impacting the racked balls. Avoid throwing or bouncing pool balls onto the table.

    Competition

    • Discuss the rules of the game about to be played with your opponent before beginning the game.
