The Dangers of Q 10 Vitamins

Coenzyme-Q10 is a naturally occurring substance in the body that acts as an antioxidant and helps cells create energy. Supplemental doses are reported to have positive effects for sufferers of a range of serious medical issues, including cancer, heart disease and degenerative diseases like Parkinson's. Q10 has a low toxicity and is generally harmless even in concentrated hospital-administered doses. Like with all supplements and drugs, consult your physician if you currently take prescription medicine.

  1. Side Effects

    • Q10 users have noted mild discomforts including dizziness, nausea and stomach cramps. Most issues can be solved by taking a lower dose of the supplement, by spreading the dose throughout the day or by taking Q10 with meals.

    Liver

    • Q10 can elevate enzymes in the liver, although there are likely no consequences of this for people with healthy livers.

    Kidney Stones

    • Kidney stones have been reported as side effects of certain Q10 supplement brands that also contain calcium and magnesium.

    Anti-Coagulants

    • As Q10 is often taken in conjunction with medicine for heart disease and stroke prevention, it is important to note that the supplement can inhibit the effectiveness of anti-coagulants. Q10 should never be taken by anyone using anti-coagulants without a physician's approval.

    Cholesterol

    • Some drugs used to lower cholesterol may reduce the benefits of Q10, but such combinations have no other negative side effects.

    Claims

    • As a nutritional supplement, Q10 is not evaluated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration as a cure for specific ailments. Q10 users are strongly advised to continue prescribed treatment for existing conditions.
