Procedures for Post-Earthquake Safety
When the plates of Earth move together, they can put enough pressure on one another to break the Earth's crust, creating an earthquake. Safety procedures may be necessary after earthquakes, so it is important to know what to do. Does this Spark an idea?
-
Aftershocks
-
Aftershocks take place after the real earthquake. It may not be as violent, but can cause a lot of damage. Because an aftershock can occur any time after an earthquake, you must be on alert.
Electronics
-
Have a television or radio that is powered by batteries. Use these for updated weather reports. Only use the telephone for emergencies, as you do not know the condition of power lines.
-
Injuries
-
Check one another for injuries. Try to help the elderly, children, or disabled first, as well as people who are trapped under debris. Administer first aid, but call paramedics for seriously injured people.
Clean Up
-
When opening cabinets in the house, be cautious. Things shift during earthquakes and may fall when the doors are opened. Clean up any liquids that may have spilled, especially gasoline or other flammable liquids.
Utilities
-
If there is a gas leak, turn the gas off immediately. If you see sparks or frayed electrical wires, shut off the electricity. If there is suspected plumbing damage, avoid using the toilets and call a repairman.
