The pinch, or prong, collar is a fairly specific type of collar that is used for training. The pinch collar is a useful tool if used properly by the dog owner.

Function

A standard pinch or prong collar
The primary function of this collar is to give the handler more control over the dog. The pinch collar allows the handler to use about 20 percent less energy to control the dog than with a regular collar.

Features

The pinch collar has interlocking links with blunted points that grip the neck of the dog when a correction is made. The pinch collar's attachment is centered so that it provides an even pressure on the neck that will not hurt the dog's throat.

Considerations

Because of the increased effectiveness of the pinch collar, if the collar is not used properly, it can hurt the dog physically.

Misconceptions

The biggest misconception about the pinch collar is that it is abusive and some kind of torture device for dogs. The pinch collar can be a useful tool for a handler who is working with a large, dominant breed of dog.
