Newton's Law of Motion in Basketball

Newton's first law of motion is applicable everywhere, and it is very easily pointed out in basketball.

  1. Newton's First Law of Motion

    • Newton's first law of motion states an object at rest or in motion will remain at rest or in motion unless acted upon by an outside unbalanced force.

    The Dribble

    • Players on the court must be conscious of their dribble because the ball will continue to bounce for some time if they lose control. If the ball bounces too far away from a player, her team could lose possession.

    The Shot

    • A shot is affected by gravity once it leaves the shooter's hand. The ball is being pulled toward the Earth by gravity. If a player shoots the ball at the right angle and velocity, the ball will come down through the basket.

    Difference in Shot Strength

    • When a player is somewhat far from the basket, she will have to apply more force to the ball than if she was close to it.

    Significance

    • Whether they know it or not, basketball players are masters of Newton's first law of motion.
