Shin Splint Remedy

The inflammation of the muscle that runs down the front of the lower leg is called shin splints. Shin splints is usually not an indication that anything is seriously wrong and will respond to self-care treatment.

  1. Rest

    • Do not continue to do the activity that caused the pain. The best thing to do when shin splints first appear is to rest your leg.

    Ice

    • Ice the area to help reduce the inflammation. Massage with ice for 10 minutes up to four times a day for one week.

    Wrap

    • Wrap your lower leg with an elastic bandage. This compresses the area and reduces inflammation by limiting muscle movement.

    Medication

    • Over-the-counter analgesics like aspirin and ibuprofen help relieve pain and inflammation. Acetaminophen can ease the pain, but will have no affect on the swelling.

    Shoes

    • Purchase a good pair of athletic shoes that cushion the force of repetitive impact of your exercise routine. This will help prevent developing shin splints.
