What Season is Best to Plant Roses?
You can purchase or order roses throughout the growing season and plant them, but where you live affects when you should plant your rose bush, and it matters if the rose is bare-root or potted. The general rule is that early spring is the best time, but these guidelines offer specific times for different regions. Does this Spark an idea?
-
Bare-root
-
If you order roses through the mail, they'll come with bare roots inside a bag. These need to be planted in early spring so they'll have time to grow their roots and get established. It's possible to order and get these in the fall, but the rose might die in the winter weather.
Potted
-
Potted roses have some roots already growing and much more foliage. These can be planted in the fall so they'll be ready to grow vigorously the following year.
-
East Coast
-
In both the northeast and on the east coast, there are two planting times. The first is March through June and the fall time planting is October and November.
Central US
-
If you live in the north-central part of the country, plant bare-root roses in April to June. You can plant potted roses in October and November. For the southern central states, plant in December clear through February.
Southwest
-
Both the southwest and California have warm climates. Plant both kinds of plants in December or January.
Pacific Northwest
-
Oregon and Washington are mild climate states, especially on the wet side of the mountains closer to the ocean. You can plant roses from January through April for best results.
