Dangers of Appetite Suppressants

Several appetite suppressants are available for dieters. Popular diet supplements include green tea extract, conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) and ephreda. Ephedra is currently banned in all forms except when sold as a tea because of documented dangers. However, ephedra is widely purchased over the Internet. Some dieters may choose to buy a pill such as Dexatrim, which is made up several ingredients, some of which could be dangerous.

Stomach Problems

CLA may cause indigestion and diarrhea. Green tea extract may cause bloating, indigestion, diarrhea and vomiting.

Blood Pressure Effects

Ephedra may cause blood pressure to rise. The eleuthro root found in Dexatrim may also raise blood pressure numbers. In addition, the licorice root in Dexatrim may also cause high blood pressure.

Heart Problems

Ephedra can also lead to heart rate increases and even heart attacks. The bitter orange extract peel that is found in Dexatrim can lead to heart problems in some people. Dexatrim also contains Yohimbe bark, which may cause heart palpitations.

Stroke

Taking ephedra may cause a stroke to occur.

Headaches

Dexatrim may result in headaches as a result of the yohimbe bark that is one of its ingredients.
